was at buell aug 22,1968 and was with delta when the enginers and our company constructed the bunkers and laid the wire for crook.was glad we weren’t therefor the ground assault. l remember a dozer operator requesting a couple troops to ride shotgun as a came up out of the ground and ran across the blown up bridge and disappeared. Was funny that the minute we arrived in the choppers that whores and beer sellers appeared on the scene.some secret fire base i think it was laid out on the edge of bunker complex.

Dave, I’m Russ and was with the 725TH radar section at Cu Chi. I went Go Da Hau FSB many times from Mar 69-Feb70. I repaired the Q-4’s and the PPS-5’s and PPS-4’S. I helped call in artillery once when the mortar tracking Q-4 was waiting parts with the warrent officer for the set. Lots of fun that night on that wooden tower the Q-4 used. I didn’t fix any of the 25’s like you operated but Smitty did and I bet you met him. He was a tall slim boy from Oklahoma. He’s no longer slim but he visits me sometimes in Las Vegas which is my home. I have his e-mail address if you want it. I went to most of the Fire Support Bases and really enjoyed it, except for the part about being scared xxxxless all the time. Ha You guys did a great job and really helped the units over there at the time and if no one has ever said it. THANKS ALOT………..Russ

Nice site, comprehensive, another voice well spoken. The stereotypes of Nam vets was so horrendous — but not all the fault of the media. Some guys elected to be professional vets; worse, wannabes really clouded the issue. The most sound testimony to our making it back in The World are folks like you, uncompromising, understated. We all lead by our walk, not our talk. And please remember, some of us went into the media and brought much understanding and truth to the issue. Anyway, welcome home and celebrate life. Your memories you have offered to others honor those who never came home. I never served in Vietnam, but chose to volunteer before the end. Sadly, images of two friends who, lacking financial resources for college, ended up being drafted and never returning to their parents and brothers and sisters still haunt me to this day. They stood and served their nation to the end, others did not, and so must be endlessly tormented by their personal act of shame. Thanks.

Hooah and welcome back home brother. I was doing some deeprecon on RTOs for my new club at Yahoo. I came across this LZ. You got a great page here, well done. I was wondering if you could do a recon on http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/thewhipandprc I am lookin for Nam Vets who were RTOs or had experience with them or with radio equipment. My husband Steve was a Chief RTO serving 2 TODs in the Army Special Forces, and he was in Cambodia and Thai and other places where he was not supposed to be at. I noticed that there were not alot out there for RTOs so I created a club for you cool and elite people who really were the main eliment of the unit, the commo men who called in Arty as well as choppers for extractions and resupply. You were the ones who literally got your team members out of the . Good job here Dave…Keep up the good work.

Dave, Very much enjoyed your web site! Our lives are parallel in that I too got into R/C and got licenced in full-sized aviation in the early 70’s after spending a few years in the service, including a 13 month stint in RVN. I was in the I-Corp area (3rd MAW, 1st LAAMs) and also saw roughly the same Bob Hope show you saw when he brought it to DaNang. Thanks for the excerpt about the “Girl in the Photo” fraud. There is plenty of disinformation still floating around about Viet Nam, even this long after the war. I am a member of the SWPC and am thinking about aquiring a short wing of some sort after I retire in a about 5 years. I was a partner with a 1973 PA-28R-200 until I went overseas (Saudi Arabia) in 1996. Now, I just want to putter around the sky in a nice ragwing when I get home. Regards, Dan

Thought you might like to know The Black Lady Mountain is still there and as beautiful as it was then or maybe more beautiful. I have been able to travel to the area many times since 69. Was just there again a few weeks ago and again rode the skylift up the side of the mountain. The area is much calmer today. The lady is just as beautiful and the people are very friendly to a visiting ex serviceman. After going back the people have begun to recognize me and it feels kinda of nice. Thank goodness there isn’t anymore war there and the families can live in peace. Whether we were right or the communists were right! Peace today reigns in spite of both of us. Good site. Curtis

Great page! I loved that you had photos of the Tipsy 25. I too used the Tipsy 25 in combat but during Desert Storm as opposed to Vietnam. I always loved how people didn’t have a clue about what the Tipsy 25 was or did. People when they saw it always were in awww of its odd looks. I remember one time while doing a static display of the radar a Vietnam Vet came up to me and made the comment that he wished that they had this during the Vietnam war. I actually started laughing and then told him that the radar had been in service since 1953! In fact the Field Manual for the AN/TPS 25 was from 1953 as well. I joined the army in December of 1988 I never thought I would be working on equipment that old. But I will say this, the Tipsy 25 was a great piece of equipment and I am still very proud that I was able to follow in the footsteps of so many fine radar operators before my time. The Tipsy 25 is now just a faint memory and few people other than those of us who used it will ever know much about it as it slips further into obscurity. Well take care sir! It was a pleasure seeing your fine webpage.

While, I did serve 6 years in the Navy I was in communications working in air conditioned buildings so never could really understand what it would have been like in Vietnam. Thanks Dave! Irealy injoyed your work on this “burning girl ” story. My time was 68-69, camp carrol, evens,Tay Ninh. I was with the 2nd/20th ARA “Blue Max” I have never been to the wall, and probley will never go, to much “gook” involvement for me. I don’t support that group. 58,220 men that gave there lives are remembered there and to have a lier come there and give her forgivness to them for some thing they had no part in. Clinton, Fonda, how many more will come there to shit on these honered soul’s? Lets all feel sorry for the poor Vietnameese, ask a “combat vet” on recon how “chuck” left our downed pilots and wounded? Where are the news stories of the atrocities done to them? When will the “REAL” vet’s of Nam climb out of there holes and tell the true stories of Viet Nam, not the pretty stories told by hollywood, politicain’s and super stars? Thanks Dave…………….

Dave, You have a photo of a P-51D Mustang (Miss Fit) on your site I want to include on my site of active P-51D mustangs. Even though the paint scheme has changed, the plane still operates in flying condition. What I need is your name in order to give you photo credit.

Interesting reading. I served from 1968 to 1970. In Nam I was stationed in the Northern I Corps. 3rd Sqdn 5th Cavalry, 9th Infantry opconned to both the 101st Airborne and the 5th Mech (not at the same time). My Unit consisted of tanks and PC’s. My Nam tour was Jan ’69 to Jan’70. I was one of the lucky draftees who experienced the early out program without extending. I went to radio school for AIT. Little did I realize that I would probably end up with a PRC-25 on my back. When I figured this out, I was able to advance to radio teletype school at Ft. Gordon in Georgia. I almost volunteered for the shake’n’bake program, but held firm and went to Nam like a good soldier. Bottom line, when I derosed, I had served 1 year, seven months and two days. Bascially, I had 148 days left when I touched home in the world and got my waling papers. Unfortunately, it was strange times in the early seventies and I couldn’t relate to the protesters or the luv-ins. Got my head together and graduated from CSUF. Considered choosing Cal Poly Pomona, but they required an extra course for the BS vs the BA at Fullerton, so I opted for Fullerton. Anyway, it’s been 31 years, next month. An awful long time for dredging up old memories. Thanks for the trip down memory lane anyway.

I’ve got a tri-pacer that I started the rebuild on (N3536P). I started the rebuild on it about two years ago and got side tracked with other projects. I took a shot of your tri-pacer for my web page to show what mine will look like when it’s done. I took your N# off of course. One of these days I’ll update that part of my page. You’ve done a fine job on your Tri-Pacer. BTW!! What happened to all of you MIDI files??? I thought they were great!

This is an amazing site with alot of stories of what life was like in Vietnam, which most of the people who didn’t go would never really understand. I think it’s great that you are sharign this with a new generation of people. No one should forget about the people who died in Vietnam, no one.

Was in 25th Divarty HHB Survey Plt from Dec 69 to Nov 70. You’re the first internet connection to my unit, even though you were’nt there much. Found one other person thru the Association who was there the year before me, Larry was in Como. I put my stuff in a briefcase- easier than figuring out a home page- for me anyway. Nice site. Rob

Dave I stumbled onto your site by accident. I think I was looking up info on RC airplanes. I was only 13 when you went to vietnam and ended up just missing the war. I,m 46 years old living in Mesa, Arizona and I am a Captain with the City of Phoenix Fire Department with 23 years of service. I have served with many Vietnam veterans and have heard many stories. I really appreciated/enjoyed your site. You did a great job on it. Thanks for your service to our country. I honor and have taught my children to honor you and others who answered the calling. Well told story, considering the amount of information you had to sift through in order to focus on explaining your experience. I am a Canadian living in Montreal I am saddened to hear about the fraud of the girl in the photo documentary. I have nothing but respect for vietnam vets you did what your gouvernment asked of you, even though history has shown the U.S. action in Vietnam to have been a pathetic mistake.Good luck to you it was very interesting reading your story.

This is to let you know that the MPQ-10 and The MPQ-10A were reserected by the Air Force in the early 1980’s and used as Electronic Warefare Platforms at Gila Bend AZ, Eielson AFB AK, and may still be used at Saylor Creek Range (R3202) and the Grasmere Electronic Combat (EC) site is located approximately 25nm southeast of Mt. Home AFB, ID. I’m an Ex-Automatic Tracking Specialist (Air Force) and I trained on the ’10’s’ at Gila Bend and installed the ones in Alaska. I always wondered who used them before we got them. If I get time maybe I’ll send you some pictures I have of them.

Ah, what a great job you did on this site, thanks for sharing. Love the Tri-Pacer, The A-26 is indeed an A-26 (unless you count the time between 1947-1962 when it was a B-26, 44-47 and 62-present it was A–26). Loved the “Frog” story, I remember reading elsewhere but don’t recall where. I had a pet rat named rodney for awhile at LZ Sharon – it loved cashews but would accept peanuts, albeit grudgingly! God, how stupid can one get? I served with A Co, 7th Engineers, 1st Bde (separate), 5th Inf Div (mech) on the DMZ in 69. If you have the inclination, please visit http://www.geocities.com/enjunier Welcome home and “Essayons”

Dave, So you are the guy responsible for all those sleepless nights firing artillery missions and never knowing what we were firing at. I swore many years ago that someday I would find the responsible party. You owe me for 365 nights of sleeplessness–I expect your payment to be forthcoming soon. GREAT site guy. I very rarely surf all the way through a site, but yours is like a good book. I couldn’t stop until I finished. I was with A Btry 1/8 Arty 25th ID from Oct 69 to Oct 70 and spent time in many of the places you mentioned. Thanks for the memories. I’m sure I’ll return often and pass this address on to many of my friends. Chet
